Minimizing the Appearance of Keratosis Pilaris
Do you have little bumps on the back of your arms or on your legs? If you have little (1-2 mm) bumps that look like goosebumps or small patches of dark skin, you might have Keratosis Pilaris or KP. This is a genetic skin condition—and is actually fairly common. So common in fact, that dermatologists have recognized it as a type of normal skin—50 to 80% of teenagers, and 40% of adults experience it at some point in their life.
Keratosis Pilaris (KP) is caused by built-up keratin (a protein that protects your skin) in your hair follicles. When the keratin builds up, it blocks the opening of the hair follicle, which results in the bumps you see. You might experience more bumps during certain times, especially when the weather is dry in the winter months. KP is harmless, and the bumps do not cause any pain nor do they itch.
You cannot necessarily cure KP; however, you can minimize the bumps and improve the appearance of the skin. The way to do this is to exfoliate and moisturize using a gentle exfoliant and an exfoliating mitt to remove the dead skin cells from the surface. However, make sure you do not scrub hard, as you can irritate the skin and actually make your KP worse!
Some additional tips for dealing with Keratosis Pilaris
Do not spend too much time in the shower or bath
To prevent excessive drying of the skin, try to keep your showers and baths less than 20 minutes, and avoid using hot water.
Use gentle cleansers
Certain soaps can be drying to the skin.
Use a humidifier
If the air is particularly dry where you live, consider using a humidifier in your home.
